Jeremy Clarkson ate one during his Meet the Neighbours series in 2002, in which he travelled around Europe. “It’s really good. It is fantastic, fantastic,” he said, before quipping that he expected a record number of complaints to be sent into the BBC about the incident.

I’m oddly intrigued. One thing missing from the story is how healthy the population of those birds is though.

Only the French would come up with a dish where you eat an entire bird with a napkin on your head.

Looks healthy to me
In Europe, the breeding population is estimated to number 3,330,000-7,070,000 pairs, which equates to 6,660,000-14,100,000 mature individuals

Right. Then, as long as they kill the birds humanely I don’t really have an issue with this bit of French cuisine.

I’ve read Bourdain’s account of eating this and the whole process just sounds...unappetizing. I prefer my food processed and boneless, thank you.

I don’t mind bones in my food I just don’t want to much them down along with the eyes, and their internal organs.

I’m sure if they killed them humanely it would ruin the flavor.

Oh, the Chinese could. If it flies and isn’t a plane it’s fair game.

I’ll dig it up, but there is an episode of SV Delos on Youtube where they boil an egg that is about to hatch in Thailand or Vietnam or something. It is a delicacy. Meat, fat, bones, and all that but I’ll pass on feathers in my food.
Edit: Found it.

Oh yeah this is ringing some bells for me. I rescind all my accusations that only the French could do this thing.

I will say that I’m intrigued enough that I’m looking at some recipes that involve chicken marinated in brandy.
Most are for whole chickens, but I’ll stick with the breast or some cutlets to try it out. I’ve got a Châteauneuf-du-Pape that I’ve been wanting to try as well.
And I most certainly will put a towel over my head when I eat it, because Axe!

It’s very René Magritte.
